Choosing what you will wear is a big decision that can make or break your professional headshot session. Here are some of my favorite tips and tricks to help guide your outfit choices.
Consider how and where your professional headshot will be used. It’s important that your new headshot
fits with your brand/profession. If you are an investment banker, you’ll likely be wearing something
different than an educator or jewelry maker. Just remember, professional doesn’t mean boring— don’t be
afraid to add a pop of color to stand out!
Shirts and sweaters with sleeves are preferred. Sleeveless tops can draw attention away from your face.
Another great option is a blouse, t-shirt or sleeveless top paired with a cute jacket, blazer or cardigan
which will give you multiple looks.
A modest V-neck, simple crew-neck or scoop neck (for women) are generally flattering necklines. Avoid
low-cut tops and turtlenecks for a professional headshot.
Color—wear something that looks good with your skin tone, hair and eyes. If you’re not sure, ask a friend!
Avoid reds and black (pinks & greys are good).
Avoid strong patterns as they can be distracting. We want to keep the focus on you.
Avoid clothing with logos and images—unless they are for your own business!
Glasses—If you wear glasses you can absolutely wear them for your headshots. You’ll just want to tilt
them down slightly to minimize any glare. This can be easily done by lifting the arms up slightly off your
ears. We can also take some shots with and without your glasses to see which you prefer. Don’t forget to
clean your glasses before your headshot!
Be sure that your outfit is wrinkle-free! Iron or steam your outfit the day before so that you don’t stress the
day of your shoot.
Wear clothes that fit you well. Wearing clothes that are baggy or too big for you can make you look
heavier. Wearing clothes that are too tight can look unflattering in photos and draw the attention away
from your face.
Don’t be afraid to accessorize! Earrings and a necklace can add polish to your outfit. Avoid overly
distracting pieces that will draw the attention away from your face.
Some photographers will tell you to avoid fashion trends completely because you want your photos to
endure. I believe that you should have a new headshot taken every year so don’t be afraid to wear
something you LOVE today… just be sure to schedule an update to your headshot next year.
The best advice I can share is to wear something that you LOVE and feel fabulous in! If you feel great,
you will look great on camera.
I highly recommend hiring a professional hair and makeup artist for your headshot session. A
professional makeup artist knows how to create the perfect look for the camera and will help you feel
more relaxed and confident in front of the camera resulting in a fabulous headshot.
Most headshot photographers work with several experienced makeup artists that they can recommend.
Please let me know if you’d like a recommendation for your session.
